History & Heritage
Incorporated in 1870, Norcross was named after Jonathan Norcross, a friend of Atlanta entrepreneur J.J. Thrasher and the city’s fourth mayor. From its beginnings as a railroad hub, Norcross quickly gained a reputation as “Atlanta’s Favorite Summer Resort.” The famous “Airline Belle” commuter train once carried visitors daily between Atlanta and Norcross for a weekend getaway.
Today, Norcross is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its architectural charm and cultural richness. Stroll along North Peachtree Street, where the Eastern Continental Divide passes, and enjoy beautifully restored homes and historic landmarks like:
Thrasher Park
The Old Cotton Gin, once run by the Summerour family
The “NorX” car, one of the first vehicles built in the South (1908)
